Blog 10: My last day at WLE

On the last day of my internship, I went to the Japanese garden to take tons of pictures to use in my project. I think I literally took a picture of every flower, tree, structure, fountain, and fish that existed there. It was super fun and exciting to actually create the picture that I wanted to create by using the functions that I learned. Looking back on the way the I used to take picture and the way I do now, makes me realize the creating a image is sooo much better than letting the camera do all the work for me. Being able to understand and manipulate light to take a photo, makes the image have much more meaning to me than just pushing a button and hoping that I got the photo I wanted.

This year during my internship, I learned that I can understand really complex ideas/ concepts with little instruction and be able to produce high quality images. I also learned that even through a project doesn't contain a clear structure or layout, I can use my own interpretation to build a structure of my own and not feel overwhelmed about the whole process.

I have not finished my project yet, but all I have to do is select that top ten images that I think are the best and show how I applied what I learned. Then I have to explain why I wanted the image to turn out the way it did by using the knowledge that I learned about the camera functions. For my WLE presentation, I will use the photos that I have taken on my own to show evidence of my WLE experience.

Post 9: Description of my workplace

My workplace of now is very unconventional, it is really the nature and people around me that make it what it is. I only work with one person and that is Russell, who runs a very small business. He get many clients, but he does all the work himself. Before my mentor unfortunately lost his building, it was small as well. It had a small intimate lobby that had comfy chairs and magazines for the clients, and there was his office. His office consisted of two computers that set on top of desk that were scattered with letters, projects, business cards, billing receipt and more.

The type of work that my workplace does is photography, photos of weddings, people, pets, and other events that satisfy the needs for the clients and their memories.

Post 8: Looking at other people’s blogs

I think I am learning about the same amount from my WLE as others, it is just that now I don't really have a facility to work at. This is more interesting to me because my mentor and I focus more on the aspects of a camera than photo organization. I am not complaining though because both taking the photo and organizing multiple photographs is very important.

The blogs that I read were George's, Tera's, Thomas', Marsal's, Jaszi's, and Katrina's. I think Katrina's blog was the best I've read so far because it is very detailed when it comes to talking about child safety and the experiences she has working with different age groups. I can make my blogs more effective by adding more details to the things that I have learned and actually giving examples of how they are helpful. Many of the people the I checked are blogging and doing fine, but I will make sure to encourage the students in my advisory more by explaining to them the easy process.

I am never bored at my internship because my mentor is always providing me with more knowledge about photography. Today, I went to different places in town and took photos of family, trees, and flowers. My objective of today was to try to actually begin to create photos that showed shallow and maximum depth of field, but I wasn't able to figure it out on my own. Next Friday I hope to learn more from my mentor, so that he can actually show me how to use the functions in a more hands on way. I will make sure this happens by asking him.

Post 7: How my WLE project is going

This week for my project I learned the definitions of f/stops, shutter speeds, and depth of field by testing out the different function out on a camera. For my project I am going to use different combinations of f/stops, shutter speed, and ISO to change the depth of field in an image. When testing the different functions out I will be able to control the focus of my photograph by making the depth of field go to its maximum capacity or become shallow and focus in one object.

In the next few week, I am going to learn about the functions in more depth and start to learn how use the functions on a camera. Then, I will pick two objects to use in my project and test depth of field with them. Both of the object with demonstrate maximum depth of field and shallow depth of field to display my understanding of how manually creating an image can manipulate light in the way I want it to.

Post 6: Mentor Interview

My mentor has been doing photography for more than 30 years.  He takes photos of people, events, and pets. Russell has recently been relocated back to his home until he can find another studio to work in, but he continuing is business as usual. A typical day at work consist of him checking his emails and voicemails, continuing the project he started the day before, handling his photographs, and looking to see if new businesses are interested in his services.

My mentor became interested in photography "when [he] realized and understood that [he] could stop time in its tracks. When [he] could create an art form that could last a lifetime".  He explained that a photographer has to know how to handle and control different types of people; he also said it is important to know how to build and keep relationships with people.  Russell explained that education in photography is on going and requires hands-on experience because in the field, you learn something new everyday. Some advice that he would give a future photographer would be to realize that photography is a whole new world and know the possibilities in your craft are endless. After giving this advice, he would explain how important it is to establish relationships with your clients and knowing how to convey the message of the client's request through each photo by listening attentively.

Post 5: Friday Dec. 17th, Hours and Project

Today I did a lot of observing such as watching my mentor work with different clients and seeing the collaboration that he had to have with the different people. He had to resize multiple pictures to fit the measurements that his clients wanted. The purpose of this was because his client was the mother of the bride, and the mother wanted to get all the pictures together so they can go into a photo album with unique borders. When I was not observing I was listening to tons of voicemails and recording them on paper. Many of the messages from a long time ago, so I didn't understand why I recorded them but business is business and I was trying to make my notes as detailed as possible. Also, I was asked to send out a couple emails to some of his clients, so he can stay in touch with them and make sure all is well. Meanwhile, my mentor was running errand and getting all his supplies ready for another client.

I have 37 hours as of now, and will be working on the 23rd to help my mentor with a photo shoot. My essential question is: How does running a photography business rely on the clients' request on a project?" The thesis for this question is: Running a photography business relies tremendously on the client's request for a project because each project requires productive collaboration between the client and the photographer, as well as completing projects effectively in order to have the photography business run smoothly. I am not really sure what my project will be yet, but it probably will involve me getting a client and using their wants and needs of the final work (photographs) to finalize and edit their images. If my mentor wants me to do this, I will have to find a client and start getting to work.

Post 4: Friday Dec. 10th, Leadership Skills

In my workplace the leadership skills that I am using are completing projects effectively and communicating powerfully. On my job, I use completing projects effectively by my mentor giving me a task and certain amount to do it in, then I had to make sure I listen to his instructions carefully. After I understand what I need to do, I began the task fully prepared such as organizing a photo album for a client, burning the album on a CD and transferring it to a different computer for edits. I am asked to do these tasks because it then makes the job much easier for Russell to work with the different images and keep them in the right place. When using communicating powerfully by answering the phone, taking messages, emails, or listening to voicemails, I have to be able to speak appropriately and relay messages to my mentor.

The skills that I am learning that I did not learn at Impact are knowing the different elements that are involved when running a business, and knowing how to answer phones when I am on the job. Some of the skills that I used that I did learn from Impact are notetaking, photoshop, organization, and using  a Mac in general. The role of an intern and the role of being a student are very different because when I am an intern, the projects I complete are not just for me to learn, the projects also affect how the company runs and the business that comes in. There is definitely more pressure as an intern because all my work has to be done a certain way and completed at a certain time to go on to the next step.

Post 3:

My workplace serves many different needs from taking a portrait for the holidays, for the family, for businesses, or for pets. The options are pretty much endless when it comes to narrowing down who benefits from my workplace because so many people want their memories capture and remembered forever.

The strengths at my workplace are being able to build so many different connections and stay in contact with them, communicating with each client and fulfilling their wants, and staying on top of documentation. I am always helping my mentor send out emails and get messages for him to continue running smoothly and overhear his clients complimenting him of his work and how much they like his portraits. All of my mentors are neatly stored away in folders and labeled by project. One weakness that  my workplace has is lack of a employee or two, I know the space is small but Russell does so many technical work on his own. I know that this business as to get overwhelming sometimes.

Post 1: First Day

On my first day, I was asked to organizes photos into different folders on the computer, to make the client's requests. Then I had to burn the two folders on to discs for Russell, my mentor, to be able to access the photos at anytime. After that, I had to scan almost 100 photos that needed to be renewed on to one computer, put them into a folder, then transfer those photos on a cd, and put them on the main computer. My first dat went very smooth because I listened to instructions and completed all my task. I impressed my mentor by completing my assignments in a timely fashion, and doing it all correctly. The whole time I was working and on task.

Intro Post: How I got my WLE: Oct 26th

When looking for an internship, I had to research multiple photography studios and calling people. At first I was hesitant about calling people, so I decided to email two people. One of the photographers emailed me back and were interested, but they were not directly in the field so they were not sure about how effective my experience would be. The second photographer, Russell Foote, didn't not reply back to my email, so I decided  to call him for a follow up with him. When I called he was very interested in having an intern, and shared with me that he had actually been looking for an intern a few weeks before. We exchanged information and he set up an appointment with me. After my interview, he decided right away that he would mentor me. The leadership skills that I used when going through this finding an internship process were managing projects effectively, when I had to use my time wisely, and communicating effectively to speak with my mentor and receive an internship.

My mentor's name is Russell Foote, and I am working for Russell Foote's Photography. It is located 22789 Foothill Blvd. in Hayward, and I will be answering e-mails/phone calls, assist in the studio, setting up photo equipment, making appointments, and editing photos.

Post 15: My last day at WLE

Today I did a lot of admin. work to help get ready for the summer programs this year. I created and organized folders that involved a lot of stapling and clipping paper together, and cutting large stacks on papers into 8 sections, stapling them and organizing them into multiple groups.

My mentor gave me a card and a gift card, and I gave her my letter.

Post 14: Almost Done

I plan on making my mentor a thank you card for all the support and allowing me to be involved with Girls Inc. in the first place. I am not very sure what type of food I will be being for the appreciation potluck, but I will make sure it is delicious. Today I went over my project with my mentor and she gave me a better understanding of how I can go about completing the assignment and I received a lot of feedback that is helpful. Also, I helped run a workout lesson and self-defense session with 8-9 grade girls in the Eureka "Glow" Program.

Over the weekend, I plan on collecting pictures with my mentor and organizing it on a poster board. Then I will include the workout lesson that I have made and begin the describe/ show how each exercise worked and the process of creating it for the Bodies-in-Motion girls.

Post 13: How My WLE Project is Going

Today I went to a school called Roots International, and did a second session of self-defense with 8th grade girls. We went over why it is important to know how to protect yourself, and what the warning signs that everybody should look out for. Also, I did a combo workout that included fit ball exercises, flexibility, and kick-boxing techniques. There was a workplace training that explained why it is important to have a vision at your job/career, and understand why you choose to be there. I interacted with my mentor  well, and made sure it was okay if I took pictures next week.

This week for my WLE project, I typed up the lessons that I have already taught and made sure I had the proper workout plans to teach again. I plan of getting all the pictures and evidence I need next week, so I can have the materials I need to make a slideshow. I also plan on filming and taking pictures of girl actually doing the workout that I made, and finally hope to start making connections and tying my whole experience at Girls Inc. together.

Post 12: How My WLE Project is Going

This week for my WLE project, I talked with my mentor the criteria of the presentation and she is going to support me in the process of creating a checklist that I will have to complete. For my project at Girls Inc., I plan on using some of the workout plans that I created for a few young participants, and re-do the lesson for possibly some of the students at Impact Academy and videotape their experience. On exhibition night, I am going to present my video along with all the work place and fitness trainings that I have learned at work and the mantras that help be on my way to a have a healthier life. In the process of these three weeks, I need to find people who are interested in experiencing a workout, gathering pictures for a slide show of my experience, and actually taping the video/slide show.

Post 11: Mentor Interview

Rosie Galvez is known as a very simple, organized, achievement motivated person who has been working at Girls Inc. for about 6 years. Her position at her workplace is the Fitness Coordinator. My mentor's main task are to make sure her staff are conducting quality work, planning events related to fitness and some nutriention factors, building/keeping collaborations with different schools and community organizations. She also keeps up with the very fitness programs that go on in the fitness center.

Post 10: Football Session 2

As of now I have 80 hours worked at my internship and am very much so on the right track to complete the 100 hours.

Today was very interesting and fun because learned how communication, feedback, and conflict are all connected when it comes to real life experiences. I know this because people need to know how to communicate effectively when giving feedback to make sure it does not cause any conflict with another person. In the fitness training, I was given a workout challenge that included all the prior exercising techniques that I have learned in the previous Wednesdays. These techniques consisted of strength endurance (full body and legs), kickboxing, ab and push up drills, and yoga poses (crane and tree). Next, I had lunch and was able to cool down for a little bit. Then I went out to Wilson Elementary to complete the second football session with 8 girls. This was very fun because I was able to help the girls with some football drills, and practice throwing and catching the football. I opened the check in and was even the target in the last drill, which was very funny. The girls almost run me over when they ran into my padded shield. Finally I came back to Girls Inc. and helped/participated in the Bodies In Motion workout that involved two Girls Inc. participates. The workout was challenging at times, but I helped them through it. Oh, I also jumped on a pogo stick and I am really good...have not tried that in awhile.

I have a couple good ideas of what my WLE project will be, but I am still not sure what criteria the presentation will have to include...

Post 9: Football Session

I entered Girls Inc. at about 9:45 A.M. At about 10:45, all the interns from Impact arrived and we started our first training of the day. This is called a workplace training, in this training we reviewed the importance of short and long term thinking. After breaking down the purposes of having both, I realized that each goal rather long or short, have an equal amount of importance and you can prioritize one more over the other. The second training was about flexibility, and we learned different stretches that helped us to expand our own flexibility.

Next, I went to an elementary school called Wilson, where is a program called WOW. With the team leader, Jenny, I helped and participated in a football lesson for 4th graders. There were obstacle courses, throwing drills, and a running exercise. It was really fun, but we was in the grass and there were bugs flying everywhere. Finally, we came back and I started brainstorming on my WLE project. I got a lot of ideas together and I can not wait to put my ideas into effect.

Maybe an essential question that I can use in my project could be: How does the ability to exercise and maintain a healthy diet, effect the way your body moves?

Post 8: Analyzing My Workplace

I work an a large non-profit business, but I only am required to interact with about 5-10 people in my work space. So for me technically, I consider my workplace a small and close environment. If I was working in a larger business where I had to interact and work with many type of people each day, I can imagine my work experience being very hectic and busy all the time. I could imagine having to get along with people that I would not necessarily connect with and make the best with the skills I take in and learn. Instead of as of now--at the small environment that I work in-- everyone is close, I just learn as I go and get support when it is needed. At a larger business, I may be overwhelmed with the work load and probably would not be as connect as I am with the people I work with now. My workplace is very professional, this business' mission is to inspire young girls in a positive way. I enjoy working in a professional workplace and I get first hand experience on how to handle certain situations in the real world. I know that it is importance to have an education because I want to be very knowledgeable in my field and have a career that I love.

The "Chain of Command" varies a little even though there are not many people involved. On the bottom of the chain is the Girls Inc. participants who seek help in nutrition and fitness, then I am next on the chain because I interact and work out with the girls, but have no real power over the participates unless I am told by Rosie or Jenny to be in charge for awhile. Jenny is a fitness team leader that is under Rosie, who is the Fitness coordinator and her boss. I am under Jenny when Rosie is busy and Rosie is my boss as well. I report to Rosie if I feel uncomfortable in a situation or need some assistance. Everyone likes and is happy with boss as their boss because she is easy to talk to, she is not demanding , and knows how to be a good instructor. She is very calm and always makes sure the the job gets done, so everything works out fine due to her effort and organization.

Post 7: Realizing Efforts

The blogs that I have read are Lauren's, George's, Evyrose's, Zsanae, and Stephanie. I think the best blog that I have come across was Stephanie's. I like the way she describes her entire day and says what is on her mind even though it is not following the prompts fully, her blogs are very thought out and personal. A way that I can make my blogs more effective is by after completing completing the prompt, I can talk more about my day and my experience. As I was browse through the different blog, I have noticed that not a lot of people are blog at all. I will help some of the girls that have the same internship as me because I know that it frustrates them at times and they chose not to do it.

It seems like I learning a lot more at my WLE because there is always a new skill that is brought to the table every Wednesday, I am continuously learning new things and gaining more information about how to take care of myself. My internship is still interesting because I am staying involved of everything that is happening in the Fitness Center, I am doing different tasks when I need to. If I ever feel like I am not doing enough, I offer my own help or ask my mentor if she would like me to do something. Today we went over the importance of motivation and I realized that my main motivation is achievement. This motivation can be good and bad because yes I get my work done, but that the process that I go there to do can sometimes be stressful with all the activities that I choose to be involved in.

Post 6: Grading Myself for WLE

In Mastery of Knowledge, I earned a 3.5 because because when asked by my mentor to facilitate a Bodies in Motion session, she complimented me on my ability to keep the girls focused and active. I deserve an A in this category.

In Application of Knowledge, I earned a 4 because I was able to remember every that I have learned from the previos week and create work out plans for a couple of the girls sessions. I deserve an A in this category.

In Metacognition, I earned a 3.5 because every Wednesday during our meeting, I debrief about the previous week. I shared how I felt, what I learned, and what may have been unfamiliar to me. I deserve an A in this category.

In Leadership Skills, I earned a 3.5 because I am always offering help, make sure the girls are doing what they are suppose to, and stepping up to new challenges when I need to. I deserve an A in this category.

In College Work Habits, I earned 4 because I am always on task, I am always participating, and I am always trying to challenge myself. I deserve an A in this category.

Post 5: Decision Making

Today at my internship, we learned a lesson about professionalism and boundaries. These two skills were very important to look deeper into and know when they should be apply. Professionalism,
was a valuable skill to go over esspecially in the workplace because I now know what is expected of me and how I should act around certain people. Boundaries was also helpful because it always good to be reminded me the boundaries can be created by me and some could already set in stone. This let me know that I need to be more aware of my surroundings.

I received more responibility. I collaborated productively with another girl that is interning with me at Girls Inc. We were given a task to come up with as many exercises that we could involving the equipment in the Fitness Center. After we had a wide range of ideas together, we were asked to use our background information of what we thought an average little girl and older girl could take as far as physical abilities go. Our mentor, then took all the exercises and sets for each exercise that will be done by each of the girls, and created a workout plan based off of our ideas. I also used resourceful problem solving by using the all the equipment to it maximum potential. When I was helping with the ideas of what we could do with a BOSU (Both Sides Up), and we ran out of ideas, we made up are own exercise. The exercise we made included the BOSU and a medicine ball, and we decided to name it the "Merry-Go-Round". I was proud when we actually were able to incorporate the exercise into the workout plan that I helped to facilitate.

The role as a student is very different from the role of an intern because at school, students can be more laid back and what they decide to learn is on them. As a intern, your job is to take in everything that you learn from your mentor and be able to understand what it is really like to interact with different people in the working world. Your skills from school and any other helpful skills that would make you successful are put to the test...you either pass or fail.

Post 4: Bodies in Motion

As I walked through the door today, I can imagine my mentor being very happy to see me because I was early and I came ready to go. She was possibly thinking that I am a very responsible intern because of my attendance and positive attitude to try new things. The things that I think I impress my mentor with are my ability to stay organize, the high energy that I bring, the way I interact with the young participates, and the support that I offer. I am not entirely sure what my mentor is not impress with because she is very open, and would have mentioned anything that may have bothered her.

As a mentor, I think she just wants to observe and understand how different age groups manage to support one another and keep each other focused in different situations with interns. She wants to see how I take in what she has taught me, and make sure I am able to teach it back with no hesitation. Also, she may want to learn and observe what me work ethic is as the week go on. Rosie will know what type of situation I am comfortable in and which ones I am not. I think when my mentor is with her family and friends about the success I have made with the different groups of girls, and the fun/silly times that we share while in program.

Post 3: Fitness Day

My WLE is everything I thought it would be from the fitness workouts to the administration tasks that they ask of me because my mentor incorporates the fundamentals of the job, the fitness session to make sure I have a healthy body, and the chance to work with young girls. When working with these girls, it inspires me to be a good model and a stronger young lady. On Wednesday, I had a fitness session with my mentor, where we did very exercises that required me to use my own body weight. What really surprised me about working with Girls Inc., is that environment is very relaxing and I actually am involved in activities/tasks that are of interest to me. I felt really comfortable with the people I interact with and that workplace just feel right being there.

I learned how to enforce behavior management and was able to understand why young girls choose to act out when they can suppose to be on task. Another important tip that I learned about strenghtening your body is to make sure that you do multiple exercises in a short amount of time, instead of one long exercise in an extended amount of time because it gives your body muscles a good balance, and you will not get bored of doing the same exercise over and over again. I hope that next week I am able to go out to another Elementary school and work with young girls, so I can observe farther into the reason why different ages groups act a certain way when it comes to getting instruction from someone new.

Post 2: First Day

On my first official WLE Wednesday, my mentor and I went over the safety procedure, the rules of the workplace, and had a Q&A session to discussion some situations that may happen while I'm working. Then, we took a tour of the whole fitness center and she explained how everything could be used for multiple exercises. After that, I had lunch and was able to talk to the other students with my same internship. Next, we split up into 3 different groups, Jasmine and I went with the fitness team leader, Jenny, and assisted her in a WOW program for 4th graders. At the program the girls main focus for this week was to play a live game of soccer, so I helped Jenny set-up and referee the game. When some of the girls were tired, I was able play along with them and interact with the WOW girls. Then, when the program was over, I went back to Girls Inc. and work with another group of 8th grade girls. In this program, it was my job to help the girls cook a health dish. I had to make sure they were all on task and working together productively. When the food was done, I had to make sure the girls cleaned dishes and pots well and put back where they were supposed to. My first day went very well and I can't for next week.

The ways I believed I impressed my mentor was by adjusting and acting a certain way with the two different age groups and being able to instruct group appropriately by making sure they completed their tasks with my supervision. I think I'll need help with adjusting so rapidly to the different age groups that I will be working with because Elementary school children and Middle school kids have very different attitudes when it come to getting instruction from someone new. I plan to work on getting used to the attitude changes and be able to interact with everyone equally. Most of the time, I was working and interacting with young girls, and there was a few times when I was able to relax a little before I was on to the next task.

Post 1: Job Shadow Day: January 6th

I arrived to my internship at 11:45 A.M. and I left at 6:00 P.M. When I first got there I gave my mentor my paperwork and then we waited for the other interns from Impact to arrive. Atfer that, we all sat down and talk about what we would expect on the job, what was expected of us, and we received a tour of the Girls Inc. building. Next, my mentor gave us an errand to complete, and that was to find lunch at 1:00 P.M. and be back at the building to eat by 1:30 P.M. I think she gave us this task to make sure every Wednesday, we knew our way around the work place to have lunch and be back on schedule. after that, we visited two elementary schools that had several different Girls Inc. groups at them. At the schools, we meet with the different Girls Inc. instructors and meet with some of the K-5 grade girls to get a feel of the type of people we will be interacting with. Our main task as a group was to observe and gain all the information that we could for our upcoming internship experience. After the Shadow day was over, I knew that this was going to be an exciting internship for me and I was ready to get started.

My mentor's name is Rosie Galvez and I will be working for Girls Incorporated. It is located at 13666 East 14th Street in San Leandro, CA 94578. At my internship, I will be doing administration tasks, weekly training around Girls Inc., programs and strategies at work. I will also be doing weekly training around around health and fitness, as well as working with youth. While I am there, I will be supporting Girls Inc. programs and providing assistance during direct service with weekly debriefing, reflections, and problem-solving at the end of the day. The way I received my internship was by asking my Girls Inc. instructor at Impact if they had any internships availiable and after discussion over the phone and in person about what the WLE would be about, she agained to take on the challenge and be my mentor.
